Project Motivation
Hydrogen is a key energy carrier for a low-carbon future, but today most hydrogen is still produced from fossil resources. Alg4Hyd addresses this challenge by developing a carbon-negative biological hydrogen production process using microalgae, sunlight, water, and captured carbon sources.
Project approach
The project will develop improved algal strains, optimize photobioreactor systems, test direct integration with PEM fuel cells, and explore the use of spent biomass as a biostimulant for agriculture.
The Alg4Hyd project integrates strain improvement, process engineering, pilot-scale photobioreactors, and direct use of bio-hydrogen in PEM fuel cells. The result is a circular, resource-efficient system with strong potential for industrial and agricultural applications.
